Real Estate in Kure Beach NC

Adjoining Carolina Beach on Pleasure Island, is the town of Kure Beach. It is the quieter, more family oriented of the Pleasure Island towns, but it includes attractions beyond the standard water-based activities.

Near the south end of the island sits Fort Fisher State Park, the site of an authentic Civil War Fort at which two battles were fought. The park comprises a Civil War Museum, which history buffs will enjoy, its own beautiful beach and the gem of the island, the Fort Fisher Aquarium. The Civil War Museum includes photo exhibits, audio-video programs and a regular schedule of events, including guided tours and reenactments of the second battle of Fort Fisher. The Aquarium, whose capacity was increased to 455,000 gallons in 2002, exhibits wildlife from the waters in and around the Cape Fear region. It also has displays of exotic fish from the Indo-Pacific oceans.

Beyond Fort Fisher, at the southern tip of the island, lies the Southport Ferry station. The ferry plies the mouth of the Cape Fear River between Pleasure Island and the quaint fishing town of Southport. The ferry trip is a great way to spend a sunny spring, summer or fall afternoon as Southport is home to some excellent seafood restaurants, a large number of antique stores and and an outdoor market on the waterfront.

Downtown Kure Beach features a handful of eateries, a few small retail stores and a fishing Pier.

Kure Beach is south of Carolina Beach, so travel to Wilmington takes slightly longer from here (about 30 minutes.) Combined town and county property tax rates are $0.59 per $100 of valuation. (Personal property such as autos, trucks, boats, aircraft, motor homes, business assets, etc. are taxed at the same rate as real property). The county is currently reevaluating property taxes, and the new rates will take effect in January 2012.

As with all the beach towns, wind and hail and flood insurance is expensive and traffic in the peak season is heavy.
