Wrightsville Beach is generally considered the pearl of North Carolina’s southeastern beach communities. A twenty minute drive east of downtown Wilmington, the town consists of two islands – a four-mile long narrow islet that parallels the Atlantic Ocean, and an interior island (Harbor Island) that runs perpendicular to the ocean from Banks Channel on the east to the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. Wrightsville’s pristine, white sands beach, narrow streets, attractive homes and small town atmosphere will appeal both to those who favor New England’s fishing villages, or those who prefer vacation towns in the Florida Keys.
The town has a generous selection of fine restaurants, a grocery store, fresh fish markets, an assortment of retail outlets, and a number of entertaining pubs. For boating enthusiasts, Wrightsville features marinas, docks, and marine services, and offers outdoorsmen a variety of options, including fishing charters, kayak tours, tackle shops and outfitters. There is a superb recreational park on Harbor Island, which is accessible by bicycle or on foot, depending on your location on the main island.

There are four major hotels and a large resort on Wrightsville Beach for the tourist trade. Nearby on the mainland are all the conveniences one could want, including outstanding restaurants, and a major shopping center – Mayfaire – with boutique clothing shops, a multiplex movie theatre, fine food and book stores and well-stocked wine stores.
The island’s housing includes a large offering of luxurious two and three-story homes, condos and town homes on both the main island and on Harbor Island and a number of charming 50′s style bungalows on Harbor Island. As is typical of ocean front communities, housing on Wrightsville Beach is pricey. The sales price of homes here averaged $862,784 last year. Combined town and county property taxes on Wrightsville Beach are $0.55 per $100 of valuation. There are a few concerns that buyers need to consider. The price of flood and wind and hail insurance has soared in the last few years, particularly for homes near the ocean. Traffic congestion for those commuting into Wilmington is an issue during the rush hours. And, of course, traffic on Wrightsville Beach is heavy during the peak season.
