A replica of the Nao Trinidad is set to return to downtown Wilmington this month. The ship will sail up the Cape Fear River and arrive on Tuesday, June 18. It will dock for five days at the London Wharf on the Riverfront and be open for public tours from June 19-23.
Tours will be offered between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
“The vessel is a magnificent full-size replica of the Trinidad tall ship that led the Magellan-Elcano expedition and was captained by Magellan from 1519-1522,” a press release reads. “It became one of only two ships to successfully travel from Sevilla, Andalusia to the Spice Islands.”
The ship is 200 tons, measures 29 meters long and 8 meters wide, with four masts, five sails, and five decks. It was built with exquisite workmanship in iroko and pine wood. Construction took 14 years and was completed on March 11, 2018. It now serves as a floating museum of Spanish maritime heritage and has already visited dozens of ports in Spain, Mexico, the United States, and Europe.
Tickets can be purchased at the dock or online here.
