UNCW to host Grand Opening in September for New Library
UNCW’s expanded and renovated library will have its official grand reopening wat 4 p.m. on Sept. 25 in front of the library. Students, who arrived on campus last month, already have access to the building. The September date marks the official for those not associated with the university. The project has been in the works for two years and cost the state of North Carolina $56 million. The renovated facility has 118,000 more square feet for students to utilize. The new three-story building will be outfitted with additional study stations, event areas and modern technology accesses.
ILM Hotel to Break Ground this Year
The Crowne Plaza hotel at ILM International Airport is scheduled to break ground by the end of this year. Funding for the $50-plus million project will come from 75% through bonds and 25% through cash equity investment. The plans for the structure measure 92,850-square-feet with 150 rooms, 50 of which will be dedicated to extended stay units with separate living and bedroom spaces. In addition there will be 5,000 square feet of event space, co-working zones, a rooftop bar and a ground floor restaurant. While no official date for the ground breaking has been scheduled, the New Hanover County Commissioners were recently told that the project should be underway as early as the fall.
ILM to get another Carrier in 2025
A deal has been struck to bring another low cost airline to Wilmington. Breeze Airways is scheduled to begin offering four nonstop routes at ILM in February 2025. The destinations include Hartford, Connecticut; Orlando, Florida; Fort Myers, Florida; and Providence, Rhode Island. Breeze Airways is ILM’s third discount carrier, along with Avelo Airlines and Sun Country Airlines, and the airport’s sixth carrier overall. The release stated that the airline doesn’t charge change or cancellation fees up to 60 minutes before departure and offers other benefits, including free family seating and a la carte pricing. The first Breeze flight is scheduled to depart from ILM on February 13,2025.
New Owners have Big Plans for a Historical Wilmington Home
If the Wilmington City Council approves submitted plans a historical Wilmington home, at the corner of South Front and Ann streets, could see new renovations including an apartment building going up directly next-door. The three-story home, which was built in 1890, is now owned by the Urban Building Corp LLC. They have proposed to the city to convert the existing house into seven apartments and constructing a three-story building with six apartments on the adjacent lot. Renderings show that an exterior staircase would link the two buildings. Plans first have to be reviewed by a seven-member Historic Preservation Commission. If they approve plans, the issue would move to the full city council,
Lagree Method Workouts coming to Wilmington in the Fall
A new kind of workout is coming to Wilmington. A company called Megarounds is building a fitness studio on the ground floor of Pier 33 Apartments in downtown Wilmington. It will be the first facility in the region to teach Lagree method workouts and use Megaformer and VersaClimber machines. Lagree is performed on a Megaformer machine. Th workout is more intense, targetting muscular development, cardio endurance and mental endurance. Construction of the studioe began about a month ago and is expected to wrap up this fall.
