Here in North Carolina, and throughout the coastal United States, there’s a saying about oysters: As long as there’s an “R” in the name of the month, it’s oyster season.
In other words, oyster season runs from September through April—though for most, it’s more of an October-to-March tradition.
Among the best oysters in the world are the Stump Sound oysters harvested off the coast of Topsail Island. These delicacies recently found their way to an unexpected place: the studios of The Dan Patrick Show in Hartford, Connecticut.
Last week, 300 Stump Sound oysters were shipped to the popular sports radio show to be featured in its weekly Friday grilling segment. And the person responsible for this special delivery? None other than Just For Buyers Realty’s own office manager, Doug Wahl.
“I’ve been listening to the show for the last five or six years,” said Wahl. “I don’t know these guys, never met them, but when you listen, they become a big part of your life.”
A frequent caller to the program, Wahl worked closely with the show’s staff to surprise the on-air talent. The effort took two months to plan, but earlier this month, the taste of North Carolina arrived at the show’s studio. The hosts enthusiastically sampled the oysters live on air, then brought Wahl on for a heartfelt call, which producers later uploaded to their social media platforms.
“I just wanted to share a little bit of our local culture and cuisine with them,” Wahl said. “I’m glad they enjoyed it, and maybe we’ll have to do it again next year.”
