Wilmington, a city on the Cape Fear River in the southeast corner of North Carolina, combines the charm of a small southern city with the advantages of a large metropolis. Wilmington is the hub of a dynamic region that has sprouted in the last decade. It is just a short hop from some of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast. It is a major television and movie production center and houses a branch of the state university system with 12,000 students and a Community College with 9,000 students.

One of its most attractive feature is the Downtown Historic District, adjacent to the Cape Fear River. The Historic District is a 100 block area, highlighted by the Riverwalk, a restored riverfront promenade. The Historic District is home to dozens of fine restaurants, theaters, playhouses, pubs, art galleries, music clubs and boutiques.

Wilmington’s thriving cultural scene is centered around Thalian Hall, a magnificent, centuries old Opera House that offers a regular schedule of musical and theatrical presentations. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) is an incubator for the city’s intellectual and cultural growth. It’s outstanding fine arts program is exemplified by the concerts, plays and dance performances staged on the campus, by the university’s symphony orchestra, its theater and dance department and by visiting professional performers.

As a sign of its confidence in the future, the city just completed the construction of a 107,000 square foot convention center, with a 12,000 square foot event lawn on the banks of the Cape Fear River. Wilmington has all the necessities associated with a large city, such as a 636 bed regional medical center and seven major shopping centers, as well as amenities like museums, libraries, fine parks and a botanical garden.

Wilmington has a healthy stock of housing, from centuries old homes in the downtown area to brand new single family homes, condos and town homes in recently completed developments throughout the city. Housing prices range across the board.

Like all cities, Wilmington isn’t perfect. Traffic is heavy during the rush hours. There aren’t any professional sports franchises and Wilmington lacks a performance space adequate to accommodate Broadway touring shows.

Although property taxes are low compared to cities and counties in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states, Wilmington’s city and county combined property taxes ($0.83 per $100 of valuation) are the highest in the region. (Personal property such as autos, trucks, boats, aircraft, motor homes, business assets, etc. are taxed at the same rate as real property.) The county is currently reevaluating property taxes, and the new rates will take effect in January 2012.
