Carolina Beach, N.C.- Earlier this week parts, and sections of a 95-foot-tall Ferris wheel arrived at the Carolina Beach boardwalk. Crews are working to erect the ride, with the hopes of having it operational by Easter weekend. Initially it will be open only on the weekends until Memorial Day when it will start running full time.
The new larger version replaces a much smaller Ferris wheel that occupied the same space in the last few years.
The Ferris wheel, along with other amusement rides on the boardwalk, are privately owned by Carolina Beach Land Holdings Corporation. The company leases the land the rides occupy from the town of Carolina Beach for $400 per month.
It took three tractor trailers to deliver the new Ferris wheel to Carolina Beach. Plans call to keep it open until November, afterwards it will close for the season but remain in place (unlike the earlier version) at the boardwalk.
