Oak Island moves forward with hotel plans, and from disc golf to putt-putt and even indoor sky diving, developers have plans to increase your recreational options.
Hotel gets approval in Oak Island
In late March the Oak Island Town Council approved a special use permit for a 106-room hotel. The blueprints for the project were submitted by Demarest Company Landscape Architects. According to the plans the Boardwalk Place Resort will be located on just under 5 acres near the intersection of N. Middleton Avenue and E. Dolphin Drive. In addition to the rooms, plans also include a restaurant, retail space, 190 parking spaces and parking for 58 bicycles.

Leland to Annex 20 Acres for Multifamily Homes
At its most recent meeting the Leland Planning Board approved the annexation of 20.35 acres of land along Chappell Loop Road. The land is currently zoned by the county as medium-density residential, which is typically used for single family homes. Owners of the property have requested that it be rezoned to allow for multifamily dwelling including apartments, townhomes and single-family homes.
Leland Gets First Disc Golf Course
Disc Golfers now have a new option for play. A town-run course is located at 893 Village Road. The 12-hole course is a combination of open land and wooded area with 11 par-3 holes and one par-4 hole. Design and construction started in the fall and wrapped up in March. The course includes a parking area and is open from dawn to dusk.
ILM Announces more Direct Options
Wilmington International Airport has netted new nonstop service to Florida destinations Tampa and West Palm Beach, along with two additional flights per week to Orlando. The flights will be conducted by Avelo airlines which first started offering service in Wilmington in 2022. Last month’s announcements brings ILM’s total number of nonstop destinations to 16.
Indoor Skydiving Could Drop In Wilmington
A group called iFLY Wilmington has big plans last month to bring an indoor skydiving facility to be located near the Mayfaire shopping center on Eastwood Road. The group is working with local builder Monteith Construction, and engineering firm McKim & Creed. Plans call to build a 5,500-square-foot building that will be 65-foot-tall. iFly wants to break ground this spring, and has raised a reported $340,000 for the project.

Restaurant Plans to Bring Putt-Putt back to Carolina Beach
The Dive Food and Spirits restaurant in Carolina Beach wants to get into the miniature golf game. Owners plan to build a combination Putt-Putt Golf course and pub to be located at 801 Joseph St. Plans. The course should be ready for operation by the end of this summer and will be recognized by the U.S. Pro Mini Golf Federation and the World Mini Golf Federation for competitive play. Carolina Beach used to have a miniature golf course on its boardwalk which was in operation from the early 1960’s until it was demolished in 2021 to make room for more amusement park rides.
