Wilmington, N.C.- One of the best parts about living in a town with many transplants is you get to taste food from different parts of the country. It typically happens when someone moves to Wilmington from up north. They came for the warmer weather and the beaches, but there is something from back home that they miss- and it is typically always food; authentic New York pizza and bagels, Chicago style hot dogs and popcorn, Pittsburgh’s Primanti Brothers and pierogies can all be purchased here in the Port City.
And then there is the food from Philadelphia. Folks from Philly are passionate about their food. It holds a special place in their heart- right next to the places occupied by the Eagles and Phillies. Perhaps no other city has imported its taste and flavor more to the Port City than Philadelphia. The Copper Penny, Port City Cheesesteak, J. Michael’s Philly Deli and Charlies Cheesesteaks are all established eateries in Wilmington.
Soon there will be another Philadelphia option.
Kathy Rooney will be opening the first PrimoHoagies location Thursday, August 17, off South College in the Fulton Station complex with plans of starting four additional sites in the next several years.
Some folks who are already in the PrimoHoagies loop will tell you this is more than just a regular sandwich. The taste starts with high-quality bread, then add thick slices of extra sharp provolone cheese followed by the meat. The menu features five versions on the classic Italian sandwich, each layered with unique combinations of cured pork like prosciutto and capicola and provolone cheese. There’s the Chicken Diabolo, which features a spicy seasoned chicken cutlet topped with buffalo cheese. And since the chain started in Philadelphia you have to pay tribute to the classic cheesesteak topped with thin slices of beef tenderloin tail and melty Cooper cheese.
The new South College Road store plans to open in August, with seating for about 15 people. The store will be open seven days a week, 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
