One of Wilmington’s most favorite sons could soon be honored with his own museum.
Relatives of Michael Jordan and New Hanover County have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlining plans for a Jordan family museum. The current proposal has the museum being part of Project Grace, which is the development of a three-acre block stretching from the intersection of Third Street and Chestnut to Second and Grace Streets . The funding for the stand alone building would be part of the overall Project Grace budget.
Michael Jordan grew up in Wilmington and graduated from Laney High School in 1981. He went on to play college ball at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 1984 NBA Draft.
Although he is considered the GOAT of basketball players, there has been very little tribute for his achievements in his own hometown. The museum would help correct that issue.
According to announcement made a public breakfast on December 14th, the Jordan Museum would “display objects associated with Michael Jordan’s career and the Jordan family’s legacy, and provide programming and community connection in a manner that honors the Jordan family’s history and lasting impact.”
County officials said they will work with the Jordan family during the 2024 calendar year to develop the building’s design, but they warned that the MOU is not a binding agreement and either side could exit the deal at any time.
