Still, this part of the world is filled with folks who connect with the emotional expressiveness of jazz… and January is the perfect time for them to listen to it live with several performances, followed by the official North Carolina Jazz Festival at the start of February.

January 4th

Jazz at the CAM: Doug Irving Legacy Ensemble:

The Jazz at the Cameron Concert kicks off the new year with The Doug Irving Legacy Ensemble pays homage through performance and recorded music to former Wilmington Pianist and Vocalist Rudy and Cynthia Tyson, the original pioneers of Wilmington professional jazz. T.S. Monk in Concert:

Spend a magical evening in majestic Thalian Hall when T. S. Monk brings his hard-swinging, sizzling sextet on tour. Descended from Jazz royalty, T. S. and his legendary father, Thelonious Monk, recorded live together only once. Come see why critics and audiences both laud T. S. January 30th

Benny Hill Quartet Fundraising Concert:

The Seventh annual Benny Hill Quartet concert will feature Saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy Anderson. Wess was a member of Wynton Marsalis’ Septet, with which he toured and recorded for twenty years, and was also a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra since it began touring in 1992 until 2006. He currently performs throughout the United States and abroad and is the saxophone instructor at Loyola University in New Orleans. All proceeds from this concert will support music education at Cape Fear Community College. Event Website

February 1

Jazz at the CAM: Sean Higgins Trio:

The Jazz at the Cameron Concert Series continues with the swinging sounds of the Sean Higgins Trio, headed by the pianist, composer, and international touring and recording artist who often acts as a musical ambassador to audiences worldwide. While he is classically trained; his own group offers a modern take on the jazz trio configuration. Higgins enjoys exploring many musical genres and has played keyboards in many commercial settings such as rhythm and blues, pop, and fusion. Event Website

February 1 thru February 3

NC Jazz Festival: Enjoy one of the largest traditional jazz festivals in the Southeast. This musical weekend starts on Thursday evening and continues both Friday and Saturday night with four and a half hour concerts featuring seven sets with six or seven musicians per set (each with a different leader).
