Okay, it’s possible that when you hear the word “shag,” you may not associate it with dancing. If Austin Powers was the first thing that came to your mind, then to be clear, we are not talking about the same thing.
Shag is a lively and energetic partner dancing style that originated in the Coastal Carolinas in the early 20th century. Primarily associated with beach music, shag dancing has evolved into a beloved social dance form. The dance is characterized by its smooth footwork, quick turns, and close connection between partners. Shag is typically performed to a variety of music genres, including rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and jazz.
Partners in shag dancing maintain a close hold, with the leader guiding the follower through a series of intricate steps and spins. The footwork involves a distinctive combination of quick steps, hops, and glides, creating a dynamic and visually engaging performance. Shag has different regional variations, with the Carolina Shag being one of the most well-known. The dance emphasizes the connection and chemistry between partners, fostering a sense of unity and joy on the dance floor. Shag dancing has endured through the decades, with enthusiasts celebrating its rich history and vibrant community.
And in January, one of the biggest Shag competitions takes place in Carolina Beach. The East Coast Shag Classic runs from January 25, 2024, to January 28, 2024, at the Courtyard Marriott on 100 Charlotte Avenue.
The competition features several live bands along with a welcome luau, social hour mixers, complimentary shag and line dance lessons, a Comedy/Variety Show with dessert reception, and even a Sunday Morning Devotion Gospel brunch. This is the 13th year for the competition with proceeds going to the Hope Abounds Cancer Network.
