It happened four years ago, but the extremes one Surf City based FedEx driver went to in order to save the wedding of Savannah and Dylan Perkins. The tale is now the topic of a national commercial.
In 2020 delivery driver Joe Engel managed to get a wedding ring to a bride and groom just in time for their beachfront ceremony in Surf City. The story appeared in many large national media outlets, and is now part of a National FedEx ad campaign, “Tall Tales of True Deliveries.”
Engel recalled the day freshly. He was running his usual route that runs through Topsail and Surf City when he arrived at a house on the beach that had a note on the door.
“We’re having our ceremony down at the beach for the wedding and you have the ring,” said the note. Engelstarted running down the street in search of the nearest beach access.
Once he got onto the beach, he realized the wedding was underway and about 200 yards down the beach “I could see the bride and groom and they were at the altar,” Engel said. “The timing couldn’t be worse.”
Engel said once he got close enough, someone screamed “Oh my God it’s the FedEx guy!” The bride left the altar and met him to get the ring.
The commercial first aired last month during NFL playoff games on CBS and FOX.
