New Townhome Communities Proposed for New Hanover and Brunswick Counties
Two proposed townhome communities have been given the green light to move forward in the development process. In Brunswick County, the planning board approved a 182-unit community on 34 acres of land in southern Brunswick County, where Hickman Road meets U.S. 17, just outside of Calabash. Additional approval will be needed before construction can start because a portion of the land is currently in the federal flood zone.
In New Hanover County, the Technical Review Board will consider a proposal to build 263 townhomes off Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne. The plans, submitted by D.R. Horton Inc., call for constructing four, five-, and six-unit buildings. Proposed amenities include mail kiosks, a small dog park, a large dog park, and an amenity area. The Technical Review Board will vote on the plan at their June 19 meeting.
New Wal Mart Coming to Southern Brunswick County
In the near future, residents of Brunswick County will no longer have to travel at least 20 minutes to get to the nearest Walmart. Earlier this month, the Carolina Shores Board of Commissioners approved plans to build a Walmart Super Center along U.S. 17 West, between Shingletree Road NW and north of Calabash Road NW. The plans outline a 171,000-square-foot building on 25 acres of land, featuring a gas station, drive-thru pharmacy, lots for other commercial businesses, and a large parking lot. A cemetery currently exists on a portion of the project, which Walmart plans to preserve when construction moves forward. The nearest Walmart locations to the new one are in North Myrtle Beach and Shallotte. Construction on the new location will start in August, with the store opening sometime in early 2025.
Brunswick County is Tuning Up for an Outdoor Concert Venue
Brunswick County families could soon be enjoying live music outdoors without having to cross the bridge. The county commissioners approved a special use permit to build Cumberland Woods, an outdoor venue off Galloway Road in Bolivia. The site will be located on 352 acres. Developers say their vision is for a family-friendly space for live music and other events, where shows will begin fairly early in the evenings and finish before 11 p.m. The venue will serve beer and wine, but no liquor. There will also be an area where local food trucks can park. The plan right now calls for hosting events by early next year.
New YMCA Center could be coming to Castle Hayne
The New Hanover County Commissioners approved a request from the YMCA to rezone 53 acres in the county’s northern end off Sidbury Road. The Y plans on constructing a new facility on the land. The building will not replace the current location on Market Street but will serve as an additional full recreational center. The YMCA plans to use about half of the 53-acre parcel for its new facility and has a purchase agreement in place to buy the land. However, the land needs to be rezoned first. At the moment, no development proposal has been made public. Any proposed development would need county approval.
Pender County Wants Help Designing its New Library
Pender County is designing a new, larger library in Hampstead and is seeking input from the public to inform the design. Residents can take the survey online here between now and June 23. The county hopes to get insights into community needs and interests in order to shape the design of the library. For more information, contact Allen Phillips-Bell at 910-259-0306 or email abell@pendercountync.gov. Last year, county officials said the estimated cost of the library was $8.2 million, but warned that may change depending on final plans.
