PENDER COUNTY TO BREAK GROUND ON A NEW LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER
Pender County will break ground next month on a new 00,000-square-foot law enforcement facility. The center will be a will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for law enforcement operations in Pender County. The new law enforcement center will include a detention center, a sheriff’s office, and a 911 operations center. The building will be located 1417 Old Savannah Road, in Burgaw. The public is invited to celebrate the occasion on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m.
WILMINGTON WANTS TO HEAR FROM RESIDENTS ABOUT A NEW HEWLETTS CREEK BRIDGE
The City of Wilmington is asking for public input about replacing the bridge over Hewletts Creek. The bridge is located on Pine Grove Drive bridge and is a high priority for replacement due to its condition. The picture shows the preferred design for the replacement. The plans call for a 650-foot bridge that spans both Hewletts Creek and the nearby wetlands. If funding for a new structure is not secure, the city will impose a load restriction on vehicles crossing the bridge. Residents can provide feedback on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course.
NEW EXPANDS SPORTS PARK OPENS IN OCTOBER
The nCino Sports Park had its grand opening earlier this month. The newly expanded park has 11 athletic fields. One of the fields is built with synthetic turf, five are lit for night play, and four others have the infrastructure in place for future lighting. The park also has a new 2600 square feet. restroom and concessions building. The park is managed by the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Soccer Club, who donated the land to nCino, which helped fund the project along with a parks bond that was passed by voters in 2016.
NCDOT PLANS TO WIDEN SOUTH FRONT IN WILMINGTON
The North Carolina Department of Transportation wants to widened South Front street in Wilmington from the current two-lane road to a four-lane road with a median. Improvements would also include a 10-foot-wide multi-use path that would be located on the east side of South Front Street. The project would start a little before Kentucky Avenue and continue on South Front Street at U.S. 421. The four lanes would end right at Dawson Street. The current intersection at South Front Street, Burnett Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road would be converted into a double quadrant intersection. The estimated costs for the project is $31.6 million total. The NCDOT is accepting comments for the current phase of project development until Oct. 25. LELAND WANTS TO ANNEX 1,100 ACRES
At its next meeting, scheduled for October 17th, the Leland town council is scheduled to discuss annex 1,100 acres that currently is part of Brunswick County, but outside any town limits. The land was once slated to house a minor league baseball stadium and entertainment complex. The land is currently owned by Jackeyes Creek Investors LLC. The company requested that Leland annex its property. With plans for the baseball stadium falling through, there have been no new development plans that have been issued for the site.
