At Just For Buyers Realty L.O.V.E. stands for Living On Vacation Everyday.
One thing that gives us a great sense of adventure is traveling back in time.
On Saturday, January 18, the Fort Fisher State Historic Site in Kure Beach will come alive with the sights and sounds of the Civil War era as it commemorates the 160th Anniversary of the Second Battle of Fort Fisher.
This free, family-friendly event promises to be as engaging as it is educational. Whether you’re a seasoned historian, a casual learner, or someone simply looking for a unique way to spend a Saturday, this celebration has something for everyone.
A Glimpse of History
Fort Fisher, often called the “Gibraltar of the South,” played a pivotal role during the Civil War. Its strategic location protected the port of Wilmington, one of the last lifelines for Confederate supplies. The second battle, fought in January 1865, marked a turning point in the war, leading to the eventual fall of Wilmington and the Confederacy’s defeat.
This month, visitors will get to experience history firsthand with a variety of activities that bring the past to life.
Living History in Action
From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the grounds of Fort Fisher will be bustling with reenactors and living history demonstrations. Stroll through encampments to see how soldiers lived, watch musket and artillery firings at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM, and chat with reenactors eager to share their knowledge of life during the Civil War.
These immersive experiences provide a powerful way to connect with history beyond the pages of a textbook. Young and old alike will find themselves transported back to a time when Fort Fisher stood as a guardian of the Confederacy’s last open port.
Explore the New and Expanded Visitor Center
In addition to the outdoor activities, don’t miss the chance to explore the recently expanded Visitor Center and the restored earthworks. These enhancements provide a deeper understanding of Fort Fisher’s role in the war, with interactive exhibits and artifacts that bring its story to life.
Guided Battlefield Tours
For those who want to delve deeper, guided battlefield tours are offered at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM for a fee of $10. Led by expert guides, these tours provide an in-depth look at the battlefield and the events that unfolded there.
