August is officially the month when America celebrates lighthouses—those iconic beacons of safety and history that have guided sailors for centuries. With over 20,000 lighthouses still shining around the world, it’s the perfect time to appreciate these maritime sentinels, and we’ve got some incredible ones right in our own backyard.
North Carolina is home to at least 10 standing lighthouses, each with its own story. From towering structures to historic range lights, they’ve long served as critical navigational aids—and now, they make unforgettable stops for visitors and locals alike. One of the most beloved? Old Baldy Lighthouse on Bald Head Island.
The Old Baldy Foundation is hosting a full weekend of family fun to celebrate lighthouse history and raise funds for preservation efforts. From August 7–9, expect a lively mix of food, drinks, games, and races during their National Lighthouse Day Weekend Celebration.
Here’s what’s in store:
? Duck Race – Adopt a duck for $10 (or 11 ducks for $100) and watch them race down Bald Head Creek on Saturday, August 8 at 2 PM. The first duck to cross the finish line wins $500—and you don’t even need to be present to win.
? Run for the Light – On Sunday, August 9 at 6 PM, take part in a scenic 5K, 10K, or 1-mile fun run through Bald Head Island’s stunning coastal trails. The course winds past dunes, through maritime forest, and ends at Old Baldy itself.
? Plus: There’s a full-on festival happening on the lighthouse grounds, complete with music, games, crafts, BBQ, beer, and more—all starting earlier in the afternoon.
It’s a weekend that blends history, fun, and fundraising—and it all supports the mission of the Old Baldy Foundation to keep lighthouse heritage alive.
