Every year, Wilmington pauses on September 11 to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who ran toward danger when the world was running away. This Thursday, September 11, the Wilmington Fire Department invites the community to its annual remembrance ceremony—an opportunity to reflect, remember, and say thank you.
The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Fallen Firefighters Memorial, next to Station 2 in Empie Park (3403 Park Avenue). It’s a solemn but meaningful morning that pays tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty on September 11, 2001, as well as the eight Wilmington firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our own city.
Ceremonies like this remind us that the events of 9/11 are not just history—they are part of our shared story. Each name read, each moment of silence, is a way to carry forward the legacy of bravery, service, and resilience.
Whether you are new to the area or have called Wilmington home for decades, all are welcome to gather, reflect, and stand shoulder to shoulder with our fire department. Bring a friend, take a moment, and help ensure we never forget.
