If you’re up for a weekend road trip from Wilmington, here’s something you won’t want to miss: MumFest 2025 in historic downtown New Bern. The drive is only about 1 hour and 15 minutes (roughly 60–70 miles), depending on traffic — easy enough for a fun overnight or day trip.
MumFest takes place October 11–12, 2025, right in the heart of downtown New Bern and along the waterfront. The festival is free to attend, and its hours are broad: on Saturday you can enjoy activities from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Festivities include live music, a beer garden, artisan vendors, amusement rides, food trucks, and beautiful displays of chrysanthemums (mums), which give the festival its name.
A Little History & Why MumFest Matters
MumFest isn’t just another fall festival — it’s one of New Bern’s signature events. Over the years, it’s earned awards and acclaim as one of the state’s finest fall gatherings, drawing tens of thousands of visitors who flock downtown for its charm, energy, and sheer variety of activities.
Why “mum”? Because chrysanthemums are the star of the show. Local growers, artists, and florists weave the blooms into arches, displays, and installations all along the festival route. The blooms brighten the streets, and the festival atmosphere brings communities together.
