December is a special time here in the Wilmington region. The weather is crisp, the lights get brighter, and every community — from the beaches to the riverfront — hosts traditions that bring neighbors together. If you’re looking for festive ways to enjoy the season, here are four big events happening this month across New Hanover County.
Riverfront Park Christmas Tree Lighting
December 4, 2025
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Riverfront Park | Wilmington
Kick off the holiday season in one of the most iconic spots in Wilmington. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Riverfront Park includes the arrival of Santa, light refreshments, and a heartwarming reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. It’s simple, sweet, and perfect for families — and best of all, it’s free.
Carolina Beach Christmas Parade
December 5, 2025
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Lake Park Blvd | Carolina Beach
There’s something extra fun about a Christmas parade at the beach. Carolina Beach keeps the tradition alive with floats, marching bands, holiday music, and a visit from Santa himself. The parade stretches along Lake Park Boulevard and always draws a lively crowd. It’s another free community event — just bring a coat and some holiday cheer.
The 12 Bars of Christmas
December 10–21, 2025
Downtown Wilmington
If you’re looking for a holiday outing geared toward adults, this downtown bar crawl is a seasonal favorite. Participants pick up “Santa’s List” at any of the 12 participating bars and earn a stamp by ordering each bar’s specialty holiday cocktail. Collect all the stamps and you’ll earn a T-shirt… plus bragging rights.
Stops include local favorites like The Eagles Dare, The Ibis, Satellite Bar & Lounge, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Seven Mile Post, Duck & Dive, and more.
It’s festive, social, and a great way to explore downtown Wilmington decked out in holiday lights.
Kure Beach Holiday Whoobie Whatty
December 19, 2025
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Ocean Front Park & Pavilion | Kure Beach
Put on your best Whoville look and head to Kure Beach for a full night of Grinch-themed fun. The event kicks off with the naming of the 2025 Cheermeister, followed by an outdoor showing of The Grinch.
Throughout the park, families can enjoy face painting, crafts, cookie-decorating, and photos with the Grinch himself. This one is also free to attend, with refreshments available for purchase.
