Wilmington’s economy is getting another boost as one of the region’s largest industrial employers prepares for a major expansion.
GE Aerospace plans to invest approximately $60 million into upgrades at its manufacturing facility on Castle Hayne Road during 2026. The project is part of a larger $1 billion nationwide initiative focused on modernizing manufacturing operations and expanding production capacity across dozens of U.S. facilities.
The Wilmington plant plays an important role in the aerospace supply chain, producing critical components used in both commercial and military aircraft. Parts manufactured locally support engines used on single-aisle passenger jets, larger widebody aircraft, and military platforms, including fighter jets and naval systems.
The upcoming investment will focus primarily on modernizing equipment and expanding manufacturing capacity. Plans include installing advanced machining technology and new heat-treatment systems designed to increase efficiency and allow the facility to produce more parts. Improvements to the building itself are also expected as the company prepares for continued workforce growth.
This announcement builds on several years of ongoing investment in the Wilmington operation. Over the past three years, the company has directed more than $135 million into the local facility, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region.
The Wilmington expansion is part of a broader plan to strengthen aerospace manufacturing across the country. Within North Carolina, additional funding will support equipment upgrades at a facility in Durham and a new veteran workforce training initiative in Fayetteville.
For the Wilmington area, the continued investment highlights the strength of the region’s manufacturing sector and reinforces the area’s reputation as a place where major employers are growing and investing in the future.
