NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Are you planning a trip to Disney World? Would you like to take in a game at Camden Yards, or go out to eat at one of Maryland’s best crab restaurants? Do you have any interest in visiting the Yale Campus or taking a tour of the Mark Twain home? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions- in the very near future all of those locations will be a direct flight from ILM.
Wilmington International Airport announced that it will increase its lineup of destinations to include Orlando, Baltimore and New Haven. The routes will be provided by a new low cost carrier called Avelo Airlines. The carrier launched exactly one year ago in Los Angeles and now serves 27 destinations. It plans on starting its flights out of Wilmington this summer.
An inaugural flight will take off June 30 from ILM to Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport. One-way trips will be available three days a week — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays — starting at $39.
“It’s the gateway to New England and an hour train ride to New York City,” Avelo communications manager Courtney Goff said to an audience of local officials and media at a press conference in ILM’s baggage check area last Thursday. Avelo — known for servicing smaller, secondary airports — launched its East Coast operation in November with Connecticut as the home base.
Passengers will be able to fly one way from ILM to Orlando and Baltimore on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets to Orlando will start at $49 and passengers flying to Baltimore can purchase seats starting at $29. The route to Baltimore/Washington International Airport will only be seasonal and operate until Labor Day. ILM officials said they are working with Avelo to offer other destinations in the near future
In addition to the low cost flights the airline passenger should know that Avelo does charge an additional $35 to $45 for the first checked bag.
