Oak Forest is a smaller neighborhood in Wilmington located off Greenville Loop Road between the southern part of the city and the midtown area.
The neighborhood is made up of just under 30 homes located on two cul de sacs. Most of the properties were built between the late 60’s and mid 70’s. Colonial, ranches and tri-level homes are very popular here.
One of the best parts of Oak Forest is its location. Leave the neighborhood and head west and you’re near the Municipal Golf Course, Long Leaf Park and the UNCW campus. Go east out of the neighborhood and you’re heading towards Wrightsville Beach and the stores and restaurants at Mayfaire.
Our least favorite thing about Oak Forest is that there is only one way in and out of the neighborhood. Greenville Loop Road is only two lanes and during rush hour it easily backs up. Consequently getting home, or leaving home to run errands, means you could be dealing with some of the worst traffic in town.
Like any neighborhood this age the condition and upkeep of the homes are going to differ greatly. Some of the properties are still owned by people who purchased them 30 or 40 years ago. Perhaps they haven’t done a lot of modernizing over the years. Formica countertops and wood paneling can still be found here. Meanwhile there are other homes in Oak Forest where the interior has been ripped out and the new owners have started from scratch; including knocking down walls, creating open floor plans, expanding kitchens, and installing all the styles and conveniences of the modern age.
Oak Forest is located in the Holly Tree Elementary, Roland Grise Middle, Hoggard High school district.
