Shore Acres is located on the small island between Wilmington and the main island of Wrightsville Beach called Harbor Island. The island has homes dating from the 1950s to the mid 2010s. Shore Acres is a close-knit community that hosts oyster roasts and other activities. Residents can also walk or ride their bikes to the ocean and restaurants of Wrightsville Beach. However, beach traffic can make it difficult travel difficult on summer holidays. The only access to the island is via a drawbridge that opens for private boats and commercial vessels, sometimes causing traffic congestion.
Shore Acres is in a high-risk flood zone and subject to mandatory hurricane evacuation. Access to the island may also be restricted for a few days after a hurricane. Homes built after the 1970s are designed to resist hurricane damage.
