The Highlands is a residential neighborhood in an unincorporated section of Brunswick County. It is located off the Highway 17 frontage road on the outskirts of the town of Shallotte.
This is the perfect neighborhood for people who cannot decide if they want to be closer to Wilmington or Myrtle Beach. The Highlands is an equal 40 minute drive (in opposite directions) to either location.
A brick sign covered with floors greets you as you turn into the neighborhood. At the front of the neighborhood there are two apartment complexes and rental duplexes. The single family homes are tucked away about a half mile down from the entrance, which means they are more isolated from the busy traffic on Highway 17.
With a name like “The Highlands,” you may not be surprised to learn that all of the streets in the neighborhood have a Scottish name; Edinburgh Drive, Greenock Court, MacGregor Drive to name a few.

Both single and two story floor plans are popular in the neighborhood with most of the homes having a Hardy Plank siding exterior.
