Why Retirees Should Fall in Love with Carolina Shores

May 14, 2024 By Just For Buyers Realty

A road sign in coastal North Carolina directs visitors to Calabash, Carolina Shores, or Sunset Beach.

A southern Brunswick County town has just been named the best place to retire in North Carolina.

Carolina Shores sits just north of the state line that separates the two Carolinas. It is the perfect place for people who love to visit Myrtle Beach but don’t want to live among all the tourists. Carolina Shores is about 20 minutes from the heart of the Grand Strand while being nearly an hour away from downtown Wilmington.

We should mention that the name is a little misleading. Although you are only a few minutes away from the beach, technically the town of Carolina Shores does not have a shore. The town actually got its name from a popular country club that, for years, was the biggest attraction in the area.

But now, one publication says if you are thinking of relocating in retirement, this town, with roughly 5,200 residents, is the best place to move to in the state.

Earlier this month, World Atlas published a list of the best locations for retirees in North Carolina, reserving the top spot for Carolina Shores. The publication gave the town high marks for several reasons:

  1. Golfing Haven: Carolina Shores is known for its golfing opportunities. Besides the country club that inspired its name, there are several renowned golf courses in and around the area, attracting golf enthusiasts from far and wide.
  2. Active Community Life: Despite its relatively small size, Carolina Shores boasts a vibrant community life. From local events and festivals to community centers and recreational activities, residents enjoy a tight-knit and engaged community atmosphere.
  3. Nature Trails and Parks: The town is surrounded by natural beauty, with numerous parks, nature trails, and outdoor recreational areas. Residents and visitors alike can explore scenic walking trails, enjoy picnics in the parks, and immerse themselves in the lush coastal landscape.
  4. Culinary Delights: Carolina Shores is home to a diverse culinary scene, offering everything from quaint cafes to upscale dining establishments. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood caught from nearby waters or international cuisine, you’ll find a range of delicious options to satisfy your appetite.
  5. Proximity to Coastal Destinations: While Carolina Shores provides a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities, it’s conveniently located near popular coastal destinations like Myrtle Beach (about a 20 minute drive) and Wilmington (closer to an hour away). This proximity allows residents to easily access a variety of entertainment, shopping, and cultural experiences whenever they desire.

Other nearby popular attractions include the Silver Coast Winery, The Museum of Coastal Carolina, which includes a live touch tank, saltwater aquariums, interactive exhibits, lectures, and family programs. The area also attracts a number of birdwatchers who like to explore Bird Island Coast Reserve, a beautiful undeveloped beach with over 1,200 acres encompassing beachfront, salt marsh, and tidal creeks.
